GCP PCA vs ACE: Which Google Cloud Certification Should You Take First?

October 6, 2026 10 min read Last reviewed: October 6, 2026 By GCP PCA Test

The Short Answer

Take Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) first if you are new to Google Cloud; go straight to Professional Cloud Architect (PCA) if you already design and run workloads on it. ACE is the associate-level exam, recommends about six months of hands-on Google Cloud, and stays valid for three years. PCA is professional level, recommends three or more years of industry experience including at least a year on Google Cloud, and is valid for two years. Neither has a prerequisite.

Do you need ACE before PCA?

Formally, no: Google sets no prerequisites for any certification exam. Practically, the answer depends on what you have already done.

  • You have under six months of hands-on Google Cloud. Take ACE. The PCA scenario questions assume you know how services behave in practice, and ACE is the cheapest way to build that.
  • You already design systems on Google Cloud. Go straight to PCA. The associate exam would cost you money and weeks to validate something your work already demonstrates.
  • You have deep cloud experience on another platform. Skill transfers, vocabulary does not. Consider a short, focused PCA ramp-up rather than the full associate path.

What the PCA actually measures

Google’s published objectives for the professional exam group into six areas:

  1. Designing and planning a cloud solution architecture
  2. Managing and provisioning the cloud solution infrastructure
  3. Designing for security and compliance
  4. Analysing and optimising technical and business processes
  5. Managing implementations of cloud architecture
  6. Ensuring solution and operations excellence

Notice how little of that is “which service is this”. The exam is testing whether you can choose between service options under constraints — the same skill the database decision tree and the networking guide drill.

A simple decision rule

If you cannot yet describe how a VPC, a managed instance group and an IAM role fit together without looking it up, sit ACE first. If you can, and you can also defend why you would choose Cloud Spanner over Cloud SQL in a specific scenario, you are ready to study for PCA.

Whichever you choose, the preparation is the same shape: read the official guide, learn the case studies, then rehearse on full-length mocks until your scores are stable. Our free GCP practice exams run the professional format; start with one before you buy anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take the Professional Cloud Architect exam without ACE?

Yes. Google has no prerequisites for any of its certification exams. What matters is whether you can reason about architecture scenarios, not which certificate you already hold.

Does ACE count towards PCA?

Not formally — they are separate certifications and neither requires the other. What ACE does give you is the operational fluency that makes the PCA scenarios read more easily.

Which certification is better for getting a cloud architect job?

For architect-titled roles, PCA carries more weight because it is the professional-level credential. ACE is a better fit for engineer and administrator roles, and it is the standard entry point into the Google Cloud certification path.

How long do the certifications last?

Associate and foundational certifications are valid for three years; professional certifications are valid for two. Both require retaking the exam to renew.
