The Azure Free Account Trap

The Azure free account is the best free resource on this page and the only one that can cost you money, which catches people every year.

New accounts get a credit balance and a set of services that stay free within monthly limits. The trap is the difference between a service being free and a configuration being free. A virtual machine is free for a limited number of hours on eligible sizes. A virtual machine left running past that allowance bills at the standard rate, and nothing warns you when the allowance runs out.

Two habits prevent the surprise. Set a budget alert before you deploy anything, because Azure will not stop a resource when credit runs down. And delete what you build when you have finished with it, since a stopped virtual machine still bills for its allocated storage and a forgotten public IP address bills by the hour.

Where Free Stops Working

Free material will carry you through AZ-900 and most of the way through AZ-104. It stops being enough at a specific point, and recognising that point saves months.

Free resources teach breadth well. Documentation, videos and community answers cover what services exist and roughly what they do. They are weaker at forcing you to sequence operations correctly, which is what the associate exam actually tests. A free video will explain what a network security group is. It will not make you work out why traffic is being dropped when the rule looks correct.

The fix is not to buy a course. It is to build something, break it deliberately, and diagnose the failure. That costs nothing and covers the gap free content leaves.
